Maverick and Me

October is National Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month. So Annie and I agreed to do a review of a book called Maverick & Me. The book is inspired by the life of the author Katherine Schwarzenegger's own rescue dog. So we started reading.
It is about a little cute puppy, who was found as a stray scared and alone. (Sort of like when Mommy found me! But I was not a puppy).
He was cleaned up and felt better. Then he along with other dogs, were part of an adoption event at a pet store.
All the other dogs were adopted but Maverick was still alone in his cage. (That made Annie sad. It brought back memories for her when she was in a cage at the shelter waiting for her forever home).
But then he was adopted by this little girl and he was so happy! The little girl had a party with all her friends to tell them Maverick's adoption story. She encouraged all her friends that everyone who wants a dog should adopt. And maybe they too could get lucky enough to get someone like Maverick!
Annie and I really like this book. Being a former stray and shelter dog, we can totally relate to it. It not only shows how fab dog adoption can be, but it also communicates the importance of learning about it at a young age. If all children believed in and advocated adopting a pet from a rescue or shelter,  there would be so many more orphaned pets finding forever homes.
We think this book, Maverick and Me would be great to read to your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or whatever child is in your life. Wow, this would be really great for teachers to read in their classrooms!!
So lets just keep talking and barking about dog adoption and include the kids in the conversation  . Adopted Dogs are fab! And we think Annie and I are living proof !
PS - We received this book from WorthyKids/Ideals for free in exchange for an honest review.

Read A Book Day

For National Read A Book Day, I thought it would be appropriate for Annie and I to read books about our respective breeds.

I told her that first we will read Poodlena.

As I was reading my fab book out loud, Annie fell asleep ! I woke her up and told her to read her own book.

Then she started reading about Frosty the Spaniel and was very intrigued. I continued reading about fab Poodlena.

What book will you read today ?

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss !

It's Dr. Seuss Day ! Today would have been Dr. Seuss's 113 birthday! So I thought Annie and I should celebrate by reading some of his most popular books.  I chose my fave to read to Annie. I promised to read Annie's choice next. She loves barking "I do not like Green Eggs and Ham' and she insists that Sam-I-am could never convince her to try them!
What's your fave Dr. Seuss book?

The Secret Life of Pets

The Secret Life of Pets movie came out today. Since we are not allowed in movie theaters, I thought we could at least read the book. I started reading the book and was immersed in the wonderful story. Next thing I know, Annie skips to the back page to see what happens in the end! She really needs remedial patience lessons!

Dictionary Day

Dictionary Day is in honor of Noah Webster, considered the Father of the American Dictionary. He was born on October 16, 1758.
As a writer, I wanted to celebrate today. So I thought it would be a good idea to read the Dictionary and learn some new words. I also wanted to encourage Annie to build her vocabulary, so I thought Curious George could help her start.  After reading a bit, she asked Mommy if she could get a “collectible” and some "canine confections” at the pet store. Great. Now she knows new words for Toys and Treats!
What new word did you learn today?

The Dogs of 9/11

Today is the anniversary of 9/11. It is a day to honor all those lost and recognize all that worked tirelessly during and in the aftermath.  As canines, we want to give special recognition to the dogs of 9/11.  So I thought a perfect way to remember those pups, was to read Ron Burns book A Tribute to the Dogs of 9/11 with beautiful paintings and stories about some of those special dogs. Thank you to all the dogs and their handlers for being there when humankind so desperately needed you.

What Pet Should I Get?

Dear world,
Annie asked me to read her the new Dr. Seuss book “What Pet Should I Get?” .  Afterward she said that since she is my pet, it is only fair that she has a pet.  So I suggested going to Pet Smart thinking maybe a tuna fish. But instead, she decided what pet she wanted when she saw Donatello, the ferret. Luckily he belonged to someone, cause she would have been really upset when Mom said no.
